OVERVIEW
The New Predator is a self-initiated cinematic concept film exploring the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems.
The film begins in a calm, luminous underwater world. As the atmosphere changes, marine life senses an unfamiliar presence and disappears. What initially appears to be the shadow of a predator is eventually revealed as something created by humans: a monstrous mass of discarded fishing nets, plastic bottles and ocean waste.
THE CHALLENGE
The objective was to communicate the threat of marine pollution without relying on conventional documentary imagery or showing its source immediately.
The central challenge was to transform plastic waste into a believable cinematic presence—something that could be felt before it was fully seen, while maintaining visual consistency, realistic marine behaviour and a gradual transition from serenity to tension.
CREATIVE APPROACH
The film is structured as a slow environmental transformation.
Natural light, clear water and peaceful marine life establish an idyllic opening. Small behavioural changes then begin to signal danger: fish flee the frame, animals retreat into their shelters and the reef becomes progressively darker and quieter.
Fragments of nets and plastic are revealed gradually before forming the silhouette of a new underwater predator. The creature is not presented as an animal, but as the physical consequence of human consumption.
AI-ASSISTED PRODUCTION
Each sequence was developed from a controlled storyboard and a series of original visual references. AI-assisted image and video generation was used to construct the marine environments, animal movement and plastic creature. The generated material was then selected, refined and assembled through manual editing, reframing, compositing, colour correction and sound design. Separate horizontal and vertical versions were created to preserve the narrative and visual impact across different formats.
